The Illusion of Books

As creatives, we all wrestle with what we can do, what we have time for, and how to bring realism into our dioramas. With real life "LIFE-ING" all the time, we don't always have time to make stuff. But sometimes, the most minor details make a scene feel truly alive.

Take books, for example. Some of us spend countless hours crafting them, hunting down the perfect mini brand versions, or buying them individually, when we need the illusion of a book. And guess what? That illusion doesn’t have to be complicated!

Here’s a simple trick: print a scaled-down magazine cover, cut it out, and lay it on a tabletop. In a photograph, it looks just like a real book, effortlessly adding realism to your scene. You want to add a little more depth? Glue or double-sided tape it to a piece of cardboard, maybe add an image to the front and the back. Next, cover it with clear packing tape to add that magazine luster, and trim the edges with scissors. Wala! Simple and fast book!

To simplify things, I’ve made seven 1/6-sized ready-to-print magazine covers for you to download, cut out, and use in your dioramas. You can use them all as is, add them to your own projects, or even glue (tape) them back to back. Whether you lay them flat, glue them to cardboard, or add a glossy finish, these mini prints bring instant authenticity to any setting.

The History Behind Church Fans

Once a staple in Southern churches and revival gatherings, cardboard church fans started as a simple way to keep cool in the heat, no air conditioning, just a wooden pew and the soft flutter of paper catching the breeze.

Originally handmade, these fans evolved in the early 20th century, when funeral homes, local businesses, and religious organizations began printing ads, Bible verses, and portraits of preachers on them. Suddenly, they weren’t just cooling devices—they were cultural icons found in homes, churches, and community events across generations.

Today, the classic cardboard fan lives on, embraced by collectors, historians, and artists who keep the tradition alive in miniature form. And now, you can enjoy your own miniature church fan—a nod to history, faith, and the simple joys of a well-placed breeze.

I made miniature church fans for my doll diorama a few Easter Sundays ago. They are already sized for 1/6 scale.  Cut out and add clear packing tape to the front and back; they are ready for use. Free Digital download here:

My Go-To Cutting Tool for Cardboard & Crafting

If you work with cardboard, leather, or fabric, this rechargeable cutter is a game-changer! While I primarily use it for crafting, it has also proven invaluable for breaking down shipping boxes, making disposal quick and effortless.

I’ve been using this tool for four years, and it’s still going strong. It cuts cleanly, handles well, and saves so much time. Whether you’re a crafter, DIY enthusiast, or just tired of wrestling with packaging, this cutter is a must-have!

The Double-Sided Tape I Always Reach For

You can get double-sided tape anywhere, but this pack is at a great price. I really like that it comes in a variety of widths and makes crafting so much easier when working with different projects.

I use this for making little books, cards, and other paper crafts, and it’s been a reliable tool in my stash for a while. It’s strong, easy to tear by hand, and doesn’t leave a mess, which is a big plus when working on delicate details.
